Dear Readers,
It is my absolute pleasure to introduce the eleventh edition of the Columbia Junior Science Journal. This issue reflects not only the continued growth of our publication, but also the dedication, curiosity, and intellectual rigor of the young scientists whose research fills these pages. Their work spans a wide range of scientific disciplines ranging from neurodegeneration to recreating extinct species, offering fresh perspectives and thoughtful inquiry that will push the needle of science and innovation.
CJSJ’s mission has always been to uplift emerging voices in science. By providing a platform for high school students at the earliest stages of their academic journeys, we aim to foster both confidence and curiosity, encouraging young researchers to ask meaningful questions and pursue answers with integrity and intention. The works of the nine finalists presented in this edition embodies that spirit.
This year’s publication comes at a moment when the role of science and higher-level research feels uncertain. In a rapidly changing world, our mission at CUSJ and CJSJ have remained clear: to support the pursuit of scientific knowledge, uphold the values of rigorous research, and feature the next generation of thinkers and problem-solvers. We believe deeply in the power of education and scientific inquiry to create lasting positive impact.
As we celebrate this eleventh edition, we also look ahead. With each new group of contributors and leaders at Columbia and across the nation, CJSJ continues to evolve while staying grounded in its core purpose of building a community that values discovery, collaboration, and the sharing of ideas.
To our readers, authors, editors and everyone who has supported us: thank you for being part of this journey. We are excited to see how these young scientists will continue to shape the world.
With gratitude,
Cindy Lu (Columbia College ‘27)
