Guidelines
We are a research journal seeking two to three page original research papers OR four to five page review articles from high school students. For the 2026-2027 academic year, all submissions will be due September 30, 2026.
The applications are now open.
All original research submissions must be at least two pages and up to three pages in length and be a brief overview of your research. All review articles must be within the four to five page limit. These page limits do not include figures and citations. In addition to being in the paper, figures must also be submitted with caption text separately.
All original research submissions must follow the "Research Paper Template" provided below. All review articles must follow the “Review Article Paper Template” also provided below. Take care to follow all formatting specifications. Papers without the correct format will not be reviewed.
All submissions must be accompanied by the form found in the submission portal tab. Please provide your name, email, high school and location, graduation year, and research subject; how you heard about CJSJ; and a short biography outlining where and why you conducted research and anything else you would like us to know.
For your research to be considered, you must read and complete the “Permission to Publish Form,” including a signature from your principal investigator (PI)/mentor/teacher. Please scan/download your completed form and upload it to the submission portal. If there are multiple authors, only the primary author and PI/mentor must sign (this indicates all authors consent). If you are submitting a review article or do not have a PI/mentor for your original research, please also fill out the “Permission to Publish Form,” but you may leave any sections pertaining to PI/mentor information blank.
Name your file as the following: LastnameFirstname_form.pdf/paper.docx/figures.ppt (e.g. you would submit DoeJohn_form.pdf, DoeJohn_paper.docx, and DoeJohn_figures.ppt). Please submit your research paper as a .docx file with the text, the figures, and the captions for the figures included. All associated figures and captions must also be sent in on a separate document (.ppt).
We follow Science's policy on the use of artificial intelligence in our applicants' research papers: "AI-assisted technologies [such as large language models (LLMs), chatbots, and image creators] do not meet the Science journals’ criteria for authorship and therefore may not be listed as authors or coauthors, nor may sources cited in Science journal content be authored or coauthored by AI tools. Authors who use AI-assisted technologies as components of their research study or as aids in the writing or presentation of the manuscript should note this in the cover letter and in the acknowledgments section of the manuscript. Detailed information should be provided in the methods section: The full prompt used in the production of the work, as well as the AI tool and its version, should be disclosed. Authors are accountable for the accuracy of the work and for ensuring that there is no plagiarism. They must also ensure that all sources are appropriately cited and should carefully review the work to guard against bias that may be introduced by AI. Editors may decline to move forward with manuscripts if AI is used inappropriately. Reviewers may not use AI technology in generating or writing their reviews because this could breach the confidentiality of the manuscript." Therefore, if you did utilize AI in writing any portion of your paper, you must inform us. If we find the use of uncited AI in your paper, we have the right to redact it from the publication.
All papers and supporting documentation must be submitted by September 30, 2026 to be considered for the 2026-2027 volume of CJSJ.
